About Dan Bowen

While I may be a veteran Producer, I’m not a “know-it-all”. I truly value the importance of being flexible, forever listening to and learning from others. Since we all work our butts off to create and make great content, my vote is to have fun doing what we do. To me, leaving egos at the door and keeping things freely collaborative is the lifeblood of the creative (and business) process.

I understand the importance of producing concepts that leverage multiple platforms…

so viewers will get added value and broadcasters will get additional opportunities to monetize programs beyond advertising and subscription revenue — television content that will activate strong, synergistic, interactive relationships between viewers and the networks they watch.

I’m a cheap bastard and will make every dollar of a production budget generate ten dollars worth of on-screen value.

That may sound like a bold claim, but I truly understand and live by the importance of saving a buck.

I have international field-producing experience that includes…

series and specials produced in South Africa, Japan, The Bahamas, The Amazon, Canada, Bermuda, The Virgin Islands, Mexico, Puerto Rico, England and France.

I’ve had the pleasure of being interviewed by numerous media outlets…

to discuss the initiatives I created and/or oversaw. Publications include: The New York Times, USA Today, The Washington Post, Television Week, The Los Angeles Times, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Chicago Tribune, The Dallas Morning News and The Miami Herald.

Synergy…

If asked, I’ll work closely with marketing, promotional and sponsorship teams to ensure that their goals, objectives and strategies are properly integrated and represented within each content initiative I’m involved in.

Skillsets and Disciplines

  • Launching shows from conception to development; from pre-production through production to post to air.
  • Creating and executing dynamic storylines with the central goal of increasing time-spent-viewing and ratings. (Revitalizing struggling initiatives with the same objective)
  • Making every dollar budgeted generate “twenty dollars-worth” of on-screen value. (Working with budgets both large and small)
  • Writing in all genres and formats: Short Form, Long Form, News, Comedy, True Crime, Pop Culture, and Documentary.
  • Producing or directing recreations and highly stylistic b-roll.
  • Serving the needs of the most important client of all; the viewing audience/the customer 🙂

After graduating from USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, I became VP of Production & Development for 5-time Golden Globe and 7-time Emmy Award-winning Actor and Executive Producer, Ed Asner. Ed’s small, yet hugely passionate and creative production company afforded me fertile ground to create, develop and produce a wide array of diverse television concepts.

From there, I moved on to produce and/or executive produce for numerous networks. I also enjoyed a diverse, ten-year staff career at ABC and ESPN. It was there that I had the privilege to create, launch and oversee hundreds of hours of television content in vastly varied genres and formats.

I was raised in an “industry” family. My father, Roger, was one of the founders of the famed Second City in Chicago, and my mother, Ann, was an Off-Broadway Director who garnered critical acclaim over the span of her nearly 50-year career in “legit” theatre.

But in the end, my greatest producing achievement came when my son, Jack and daughter, Sydney entered the world.
